St. Rose Academy welcomed back
Maestro Lawrence Loh,
Director of the NEPA
Philharmonic, for a special "Meet the Maestro" chat on Wednesday, May 2, 2007
at the
Academy .
This event spotlighted the creation of "Reverie: Through a Mountain of
Buried Night," an original work commissioned by Dr. Midori
Yamanouchi-Rynn and composed by N. Lincoln Hanks to celebrate the 35th
Anniversary of the NEPA Philharmonic and the rich heritage of the
Northeastern Pennsylvania Region.
Mr. Hanks discussed the composition process of "Reverie: Through a
Mountain of Buried Night," and how the piece reflects our
region's rich history.

Served in the White House Visits Students
Donates Memorabilia to
St. Rose Academy
An Alum of St. Rose High School who served in the White House visited St.
Rose Academy on Friday, March 2nd. Mary Wengryznek, whose career
spanned 5 presidencies from Johnson through Reagan, shared her
experiences with students and faculty during an afternoon assembly.
Ms. Wengryznek has also graciously donated to the school over 100 items
of White House memorabilia which she collected during her career.
Among the items are signed photographs of Presidents, First Ladies,
political leaders, and such celebrities as Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth
Taylor. Prior to her visit, students viewed these items, including a
picture autographed by Presidents Reagan, Carter, Ford and Nixon (above
right).

Service
For the second year, St. Rose students assisted Sr. Adrian,
Friends of the Poor, and the Burne family in their good work of
helping those in need to have a traditional Thanksgiving.

During the week of October 14th, 2006 through the 22nd,
our senior class traveled to New Orleans to participate in
"Operation Helping Hands," assisting in
the clean-up of homes and properties.
We're proud of their hard
work and commitment to helping
families still recovering from hurricane
Katrina.

ST. ROSE PACKS THE HOUSE
AT SMOKEY BONES

More than 350 turned out for St. Rose Academy Spirit Night
in October at
Smokey Bones Restaurant in
Dickson City, in support of the senior class' upcoming service trip to
New Orleans.
Six teachers and administrators joined the Smokey Bones staff in serving
students, their families and friends on this evening loaded with fun and
great food.
As a result, Smokey Bones is generously donating $550 to
help our seniors get to New Orleans for their senior service project.
Our thanks to Manager Sheila Funket, the Smokey Bones staff, and all who
supported this effort.
MAESTRO
VISITS SRA
NEPA Philharmonic's Music Director,
Maestro Larry Loh,
visited St. Rose Academy on Monday evening,
Sept. 25th. About 150 attended the event, at which Maestro Loh
answered questions and shared his insights and experiences as a seasoned
conductor.
Our thanks to the Maestro, NEPA Philharmonic, the St. Rose Parents'
Club, our student volunteers, and all who made this amazing evening
possible.

AP BIOLOGY, OTHER NEW COURSES ADDED
With the addition of new faculty, SRA has been able to
expand its curriculum to include the following course selections:
Advanced Placement Biology, Contemporary Issues in the Social
Sciences, Psychology / Sociology. Watch for additional
electives to be added in the future.

WE HONOR MARY

May 19, 2006: SRA students crown Mary in a prayerful ceremony held in the
school's auditorium.
SRA "Baby Shower" benefits St. Joseph's Center
On April 2, 2005, the SRA Service Club held a "Baby Shower" to benefit
the "New Blessings" Program at St. Joseph's Center. Over 50 people
attended, donating approximately 100 items--among them, infant clothing,
toiletries, and 3 strollers.
"Angels on Earth" Grace SRA
Three exchange students from Cuba visited SRA recently to share
their musical talents and talk about the cultural similarities and differences
between their native country and the USA. Highlights of this fun and
informative performance by the "Angels on Earth" included sing-alongs and
dancing.
SRA's First Dance a Huge Success
On Saturday, December 17th,
2005, St. Rose students enjoyed the Academy's first ever semi-formal Christmas Dance. Held in the school's spacious atrium, the event was attended by over 80, and
was regarded by many as their best dance ever.
WW2 Veteran Addresses SRA Student s
In honor of Veteran's Day, WW2 Veteran Abe Plotkin addressed SRA students about his experiences, sharing personal photos and memorabilia. Mr. Plotkin served in General Patton's 3rd Army, helped liberate Dachau, and was one of only 100 American soldiers recently receiving a medal from the French government.

Selects Team Colors
Over the past few weeks, SRA students nominated 12 color combinations for consideration as the school's team colors. These were were presented to the Board, and the possibilities were narrowed to 6. Students voted, and one combination emerged as the favorite: black and maroon. These colors are an appropriate match for our mascot, the Phoenix--the mythical bird that rises in red flames from black ashes. There are also maroon and black highlights throughout the interior of SRA.
Computer Lab Donated
Best Buy has donated 30 Brand New computers and monitors to St. Rose Academy. The donation also includes 6 digital projectors for classroom use.

St. Rose Receives National Recognition
St. Rose Academy's efforts to help students displaced by hurricane Katrina
resulted in a visit to a Senate sub-committee hearing on funding for schools
that assist them. There, SRA students met Senator Lamar Alexander (3rd
from l).
St. Rose Selects Mascot
For our mascot, St. Rose Academy has chosen the Phoenix, the mythical bird that rises from the ashes, symbolizing resurrection and triumph over adversity.
SRA Students Support Steamtown Runners
St. Rose students cheered on Steamtown
Marathon runners as they entered Mayfield on the 3/4 mile straightaway stretch
of Lackawanna Avenue near Valley Lanes.
