What is Block Scheduling?

Traditional High School schedules require students to take seven or eight 45- minute classes a day.  Students complete their credits over the course of an entire school year.  In contrast, St. Rose uses a two-semester, college-style system of scheduling.  Our students take four 93-minute courses per day for a semester, and then four new courses in the second semester.

Block scheduling offers a number of advantages.  For students, the reduced course load lightens homework (and bookbags), and enables them to focus their efforts and attention more effectively.  For teachers, the extended class time allows greater flexibility for presenting lessons and offering individual attention to students.  The mid-year change of courses provides a refreshing change for everyone, and prepares students for the college experience.

Does SRA have accreditation?
St. Rose Academy is a Private Academic school fully licensed as such by the state of Pennsylvania. Because we are newly formed, we have not yet been eligible to apply for accreditation. Though accreditation is not a requirement for licensure or operation, we plan to seek accreditation in the near future.

Are all SRA's teachers certified?
All of our teachers are certified in their subject areas. This is required by state law.  There is no state certification for Religion, but our Religion teachers have had extensive background and education in the Catholic faith.  Our current Religion teacher holds a Master's degree in Theology from Marywood University.

How is Religion class handled, especially for students of other faiths?
As a private academic school in the Catholic tradition, St. Rose Academy adheres to the faith doctrines, moral teachings, and prayer traditions of the Catholic Church. We seek not only to educate the mind, but to nurture our students' spirituality, and inspire it with a love of service. Because we are a welcoming church, students of all faiths are accepted at St. Rose. It is expected that all students approach the school’s faith practices with respect and reverence. However, there is never any pressure on non-Catholic students to affirm Catholic beliefs, or convert to Catholicism.

Our students pray every day, attend liturgy monthly, fulfill an annual service commitment, and participate in an annual retreat with their class. Our Theology curriculum is faithful to the Catholic tradition, and students are required to successfully complete Religion classes at each grade level.
